How it works

Three steps, and none of them ask anything of your support team

SelfServe attaches to the order page Shopify already sends customers to. There is no portal to build, no account for anyone to create, and no email sequence to write.

The loop

Merchant installs, customer edits, order updates

The first step happens once. The second and third happen on their own, every time an order is placed, for as long as the app is switched on.

  1. Step 01 · Merchant

You install and set the rules

Install from the Shopify App Store, place the block on your Order Status page from the theme editor, pick an edit window and switch on the changes you allow.

    Window set to3 hours
  2. Step 02 · Customer

They open the order they already have

No new email, no account, no password. The confirmation Shopify already sends links to the Order Status page, and the SelfServe block is on it with a live countdown showing what is left of the window.

  3. Step 03 · Both

They edit, the validator checks, the order updates

The customer changes what they need. Any address is checked against postal reference data before it is accepted. The order in your admin updates within seconds, with a timeline note recording exactly what moved.

Worked example

One order, one typo, and the three hours after checkout

This is the sequence as it actually runs, taken from a store on a three-hour window whose warehouse fulfils in the afternoon.

  1. 14:02Shopify

Order #1042 is placed. The three-hour edit window opens at the moment the order is created.

  2. 14:38Customer

They open the Order Status page from the confirmation email Shopify sent, and the SelfServe block shows 02:24:00 remaining.

  3. 14:39Customer

They spot that their email address is misspelled and correct it. A single-use confirmation link goes to the new address.

  4. 14:41SelfServe

The link is opened from the new inbox. The order email is updated in Shopify and a timeline note records the old value.

  5. 14:44Validator

They also change the delivery address. The validator refuses it: the postal code given belongs to a different city than the one typed above it.

  6. 14:45SelfServe

The corrected address matches to premise level. It is written to the order, formatted for the carrier, and noted on the timeline.

  7. 16:20Warehouse

A fulfilment is created on the order. Editing closes forty-two minutes early, because the parcel is now committed.

  8. 17:02SelfServe

The point at which the window would have expired on its own. The block now shows your support contact instead of edit controls.

Boundaries

What happens when editing is no longer allowed

Three things can end an edit window, and in all three the customer is told plainly rather than shown a control that will fail.

  • When the window expires

The edit controls are removed from the Order Status page and replaced with a short line telling the customer that changes are now handled by your team, plus a link to your support contact. Nothing breaks on submit, because there is nothing left to submit.

  • When a fulfilment is created

Editing closes immediately, whatever time was left. This applies to partial fulfilments too, since the address on the remaining items usually belongs to the same picking run. Your warehouse never chases a moving target.

  • When Shopify rejects the write

If the order is locked in the moment between the customer confirming and SelfServe writing, the change is not applied and the customer is told so, with your support link. The order is never left half-edited.

See it running on an order before you commit to it

Install and place a test order, or book a call and we will run the whole loop on a screen share, including the part where the validator refuses a bad postal code.
